About Muir PTSA
About Muir PTSA: FAQs
Who can join PTSA?
Anyone who cares about the students at John Muir! Parents, students, family, neighbors, friends, Faculty, Staff & Administration. Anyone can come to PTA meetings or help out at Muir and PTA events but you must be a member to vote at the meetings on how money is spent. Your membership is your voice and by increasing our numbers you help the Muir PTA have greater leverage in advocating for your children.
What does it cost to become a member of JMMS PTSA?
The annual membership fee for each school is $8.00. Of that, $0.50 stays at John Muir and the rest is divided among the Burbank PTA Council, the regional 1st District PTA, the State PTA and the National PTA to advocate for the health, safety and well being of children all across America.
How can I give directly to support my child at John Muir?
This year, we are asking everyone to Double It Up! by adding an additional $8.00 donation to your membership amount. Dollars are being cut from education funding every time the California Legislature tries to balance the budget, so your direct double donation will help ensure the high quality educational experience we expect for our children. Your donation is tax deductible so please give generously!
Where do PTSA fundraising dollars go?
Here is a partial list of what our PTA has accomplished in the last few years:
- Donated and ran Snack Shack at Tri-School Track Meets
- Paid for assemblies and programs each year at Muir
- Paid for and assisted with 6th grade DAY OF THE ANCIENTS
- Paid for and assisted with 7th grade AROUND THE WORLD DAY
- Paid for the professional theater company and ass
- isted with 8th grade SHAKESPEARE DAY
- Donated drinks for School Dances
- Donated to and organized Totally Appreciated Gathering (TAG) in appreciation of Muir's great staff
- Volunteered to turn an eyesore at the back of the school into a thriving garden that the kids take care of
- Obtained a grant from Lowe's so that an outdoor classroom could be added adjacent to the Muir Student Garden
- Maintenance of Muir Parent e-mail database
- Continued support of Challenge Day (a program that challenges our students from different backgrounds to work together)
- Provided prizes for Muir's annual spelling bee
- Purchased 2 bass instruments for Muir's Orchestra
- Provided leadership training for parents to learn to fight for funding for Muir's students in local and state government
- Donated gift cards as Muir Motivators to reward kids that struggle for doing well
- Donated dollar coins for Muir Students of the Month to recognize high achievement
- Donated to and volunteered at The Rockin' Family Fun Night and Rockin' for the Arts concerts that provides band performance opportunities and raises money for Muir grade level field trips and arts programs
- Donated and put together racks so that students' backpacks weren't laying on the the floor outside of classrooms
And this does NOT include all the parent involvement in the arts departments: drama, visual arts, orchestra and choir to make all those programs the best they can be. (See the separate tabs for Choir, Instrumental and Drama to find out about those programs.)
How would you use my help if I volunteered?
Muir is FAMOUS FOR FRIENDLINESS! At Muir there are many levels of involvement – none of them high-pressure - and through volunteering you will get to know the people at Muir and how the school works. You can work from home cooking for TAG meals (Tag stands for Totally Appreciated Gathering and is one way that Parents say THANK YOU to the Muir Staff.). You will also have the opportunity to help during the school day with grade level field trips or our special themed Grade Level days (such as Day of the Ancients, etc). A teacher may have a specific project requiring your help. There are also many PTA activities, such as, helping with Promotion and 8th Grade Awards Ceremony, working concessions or tickets at our Rockin' concerts, helping with our after school dances, Xeroxing, and working in the Ball Room at lunch. We also need people with different language skills this year!
To learn more about how you can help as a volunteer, please come to our monthly PTA Meetings and/or contact our PTA Volunteer coordinator (see PTA Officers/Chairpersons > Volunteer Coordinator). Also, be sure to fill out the Muir PTA Information & Volunteer form in your registration packet.
Is the Muir PTSA open to new ideas?
Absolutely! We would love to hear from you. Contact the PTA president (see PTA Officers/Chairpersons).
How do I get information about Muir?
Check this website frequently. Choir, Instrumental and Drama information will also be posted here under the Arts tab. You can also sign up for our PTA e-mail updates by sending your e-mail address to the PTA President (see PTA Officers/Chairpersons.)

Muir is once again in competition with the other Burbank Middle School PTAs this year to win the "Marvelous Middle School Membership Monkey." This unusual trophy is awarded annually to the school with the highest membership, as measured against it’s population. Anyone can come to PTA meeting and find out what is going on at school, but only members can vote and have a say in how PTA money is spent and what priorities we set for the future. We urge all Muir families to become part of the PTA to help keep our voice strong in city, district and state affairs.
Membership is only $8.00! Join us by becoming a member: parents, caregivers, students, grandparents, siblings, and every member of your extended family. Consider increasing your donation to $20 and 100% of the donation will go directly to funding the great programs at Muir, including special grade level days, the art enrichment programs, and much more. Muir wants to beat Jordan and Luther this year with the largest membership in Burbank! Include your e-mail on your membership card and we will add you to the Muir Newsletter e-mail list.
Help us win the Marvelous Monkey trophy and keep it from the grasp of Jordan and Luther Middle Schools! Tell those other Middle schools we have the most committed parent and student support in all of Burbank!
